Mark R. Crimmin is a Professor of Organometallic Chemistry at Imperial College London's Department of Chemistry, within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He holds affiliations with the Agri Futures Lab, Energy Futures Lab, Grantham Institute, Industrial Biotechnology Hub, and Synthesis and Catalysis groups.
He earned his MSc in Organic Synthesis from the University of Bristol and his PhD in Main Group Chemistry and Catalysis from Imperial College London. His career includes a Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Research Fellowship at UC Berkeley and a Royal Society University Research Fellowship at UCL before joining Imperial. He has held roles from Lecturer (2011) to Senior Lecturer (2016), Reader (2019), and Professor (2021). Currently, he serves as Director of Research and Deputy Head of the Department of Chemistry.
Research focuses on fluorine chemistry, organometallic reactions, and sustainable catalysis, including recycling fluorocarbons and developing main-group metal catalysts. Key interests include fluorine chemistry applications in climate change mitigation, CO homologation, and transition metal reactivity.
His work spans over 150 publications, emphasizing CO₂ reduction, hydrogenation processes, and novel catalytic methods. Notable awards include Royal Society and Royal Commission fellowships. His group collaborates on projects like the Curious Chemical Catalysis outreach program and contributes to Imperial’s Sustainable Chemistry initiatives.
Mentorship includes training over 20 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom hold academic and industrial roles globally. His labs focus on molecular editing, sustainable synthesis, and fluorine chemistry innovations.
