Mark R Hemmila

Mark R Hemmila is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School and serves as the Medical Director for Adult Trauma and the Associate Chief Medical Information Officer for Surgery Departments. His clinical expertise spans General Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Burn Surgery, and Critical Care.

Dr. Hemmila’s research focuses on comparative effectiveness evaluation of trauma and acute care surgery, with emphasis on statewide quality improvement programs like the Michigan Trauma Quality Improvement Program (MTQIP) and Michigan Acute Care Surgery (MACS) Collaboratives. He also contributes to initiatives such as the Michigan Statewide Trauma System and the University of Michigan International Center for Automotive Medicine (ICAM).

His recent publications highlight geospatial analysis in trauma care, post-discharge complications, opioid use risks, and mental health impacts on recovery. Dr. Hemmila actively mentors residents and junior faculty in research.
