About
Associate Professor Mark Nelson is a faculty member in the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics at the University of Wollongong's Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. With over 20 years of research experience, he specializes in applying mathematical techniques to engineering problems.
Education:
- PhD Applied Mathematical Studies, University of Leeds (1990-1994)
- MSc Nonlinear Mathematics, University of Bath (1989-1990)
- BSc(Hons) Chemistry and Mathematics, University of Leeds (1986-1989)
Nelson's research focuses on engineering mathematics with expertise in bifurcation theory, continuation methods, dynamical systems methodology, and singularity theory applied to practical engineering problems. His work particularly emphasizes non-linear chemical dynamics, reaction engineering, bioreactor engineering, and the biological treatment of wastewater. Early in his career, he worked on combustion and fire engineering problems before expanding into environmental engineering applications at Wollongong.
Professional Recognition:
- Recipient of the J.H. Michell Medal in 2004, recognizing him as the most outstanding new researcher in applied mathematics in Australia and New Zealand
- Received a Peer Recognition Award from the Australian College of Educators in 2009
- Current Chair of the Engineering Mathematics Group
Nelson serves as an associate editor for Chemical Product and Process Modelling and sits on the editorial boards of both the ANZIAM Journal and the International Journal of Food Engineering. He is an associate member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers (AMIChemE) and referees for numerous journals in applied mathematics and chemical/environmental engineering. He actively supervises Masters and PhD students in research areas aligned with his expertise.
