Mark Neely is a Professor of English at Ball State University's Department of English within the College of Sciences and Humanities. He holds a M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama (2002) and a B.A. in English from the University of Illinois (1993). His academic career spans over 18 years, including roles as Assistant Professor (2004–2009) and Associate Professor (2009–2016) before his current position.
Neely's research and creative work focus on poetry, creative writing pedagogy, and literary editing. He has authored three poetry collections: Beasts of the Hill (2012), Dirty Bomb (2015), and Ticker (2021), the latter winning the Idaho Prize for Poetry. His poetry explores themes like contemporary American culture, militarism, environmentalism, and personal reflection. Notable awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship and an Indiana Individual Artist Grant.
Neely teaches courses in creative writing, poetry, and literary publishing. He serves as a senior editor for River Teeth: a Journal of Nonfiction Narrative. His publications appear in journals like FIELD, New England Review, and Willow Springs.
