About
Professor Mark Moore is an ARC Future Fellow and Director of the online Museum of Stone Tools at the University of New England. His research examines how hominin cognition is reflected in stone tool production techniques, studying both non-modern hominins like Homo floresiensis and modern Homo sapiens across global sites. Moore's theoretical work addresses the 'spandrels effect' in stone flaking and employs experimental flintknapping to reconstruct prehistoric reduction sequences.
He collaborates with Aboriginal communities to rediscover traditional stone-working practices. Moore coordinates courses in Human Evolution and Archaeology, Stone Tools analysis, and Aboriginal Archaeology.
