He holds affiliate positions at the Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research and Centre for Cardiovascular Health and Research. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Medical Science and Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery from Newcastle University, Graduate Diploma from the University of Oxford, Advanced Diploma of Clinical Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and Doctoral Diploma of Medicine from Newcastle University.
Professor Midwinter's research spans trauma surgery, microcirculation, biomedical engineering, and motor neuron disease. His work focuses on:
- Trauma resuscitation and haemorrhagic shock management
- Biomechanical characterization of human tissues for surgical training
- Microvascular assessment in chronic diseases
- Combat injury treatments and military medicine
- Development of high-fidelity medical simulators
His publication record demonstrates extensive work in surgical techniques, trauma care, biomedical device validation, and anatomical studies. Recent articles show strong emphasis on translating biomechanical research into clinical education tools and advancing microcirculation monitoring in critical care settings.
Professor Midwinter leads significant research projects funded by:
- NHMRC, Cure for MND Foundation (2023-2028)
- Motor Accident Insurance Commission (2025-2028)
- Australia's Economic Accelerator (2025-2026)
- Wellcome Leap Surgery (2023-2024)
He currently supervises multiple doctoral candidates researching trauma response, biomechanical tissue properties, microcirculatory dynamics, and aeromedical trauma care. His laboratory focuses on developing clinically relevant surgical training models and advancing trauma resuscitation protocols.
