Mark Micire is a researcher in Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell), College of Engineering, specializing in robotics for search and rescue operations. After completing his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Computer Science, he worked on designing robotics systems to aid first responders during disasters. In 2001, he contributed to search and rescue efforts at the World Trade Center, which led him to become a certified firefighter and expand his robotics work.
His career includes founding a business focused on search and rescue equipment and collaborating with Prof. Holly Yanco on grants. He later joined UMass Lowell’s lab under Yanco for his Ph.D. program, emphasizing collaboration and networking in research. Currently, Micire works as a research scientist at Carnegie Mellon University’s NASA Ames Research Center.
Micire also volunteers monthly as a technical search specialist for FEMA, deploying robotics in disaster scenarios like Hurricane Katrina. He highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and attending conferences to advance scientific understanding.
