Mark Michaeli

Prof. Mark Michaeli is a Full Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), leading the Chair for Sustainable Development of Urban and Rural Areas within the TUM School of Engineering and Design and Department of Architecture. Since 2021, he has served as Vice Dean for Studies and Teaching at TUM. His academic journey includes roles at ETH Zurich (2001–2010), the University of St. Gallen (2009–2016), and the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) Future Cities Laboratory (2009–2011).

His research focuses on urban and rural transformation processes, sustainable planning, shrinkage dynamics, and the integration of digital methods for spatial analysis. Key projects include the 'Urban Transitions Lab,' 'Design Labs,' and contributions to initiatives like Urban Switzerland 2050 and Horizon 2020. Michaeli bridges academia and practice through interdisciplinary collaborations with municipalities and international institutions. He has been actively involved in urban development projects across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, emphasizing participatory design and policy-driven solutions.
