Dr. Mark McCarthy is a Senior Lecturer & Programme Chair in Heritage at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Ireland, based in the Department of Heritage & Tourism at the Galway City campus. He founded the Heritage Research Group (HRG) and specializes in cultural heritage studies, urban historical geography, and post-conflict memory. He teaches modules including Modern Irish History, European History Field Studies, and Research Methods, and has supervised 13 PhD candidates.
He is Principal Investigator for projects like the 'Golden Jubilee 1972–2022 Commemoration' and co-authored award-nominated publications such as Ireland’s 1916 Rising (2012) and heritage trail guides for Galway County and the Loughnane Brothers. His current book project traces the history of technological education in the West of Ireland.
Awarded SFHEA (2023) and President’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2016), McCarthy holds Royal Society fellowships (FRHistS since 2013; FRGS since 1999).
