Mark Lemon

Mark Lemon is Professor of Integrated Environmental Systems at De Montfort University, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Sustainable Development and the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD). His work bridges engineering, sustainability, and socio-technical systems, with a strong emphasis on transdisciplinary research and systems thinking.

His research interests include integrated environmental systems, resource efficient design, smart grids, carbon management in organizations, biophilic design, and sustainable urban development. He applies systems approaches to complex challenges in energy, environment, and society, often focusing on policy-relevant outcomes and practical implementation.

His recent publications reflect a trend toward interdisciplinary sustainability research, combining methods from social science, engineering, and economics. Key themes include smart energy systems, urban inequality, local economic development through sustainable food systems, and institutional carbon management. He frequently employs complex systems modelling and integrative methodologies in his work.

Mark Lemon supervises multiple PhD students on topics such as renewable energy systems, community engagement, smart cities, and low-cost housing. He has led numerous externally funded research projects with EPSRC, EU, TSB, DEFRA, and KTP, focusing on energy efficiency, sustainable development, and organizational change. His consultancy includes work with Marlow Foods, BT, Cisco, and the Environment Agency. He is also an Associate Editor for Environmental Sciences – Journal of Integrative Environmental Research and Design Principles and Practices and has served as an external examiner for several universities.

He is actively involved in research groups such as the IESD and contributes to initiatives like the ‘Living Lab’ and the Square Mile Project. His work continues to influence both academic discourse and practical applications in sustainability transitions and environmental systems thinking.
