Mark Kozek is a Professor of Mathematics at Whittier College, where he has served since 2007. He earned his A.B. and Ed.M. from Harvard University, M.A. from Wake Forest University, and Ph.D. in Number Theory from the University of South Carolina. He was Chair of the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science from 2015 to 2018 and promoted to Professor in 2021.
His research focuses on Number Theory inspired by Paul Erdős, including covering systems, harmonious pairs, Goldbach conjectures for polynomials, and applications to cryptography. He also explores interdisciplinary topics like Mathematics in Literature and Cinema, soccer analytics, and code-breaking history. Notable contributions include co-editing Mathematical Themes in a First-Year Seminar (MAA, 2021) and publishing on polygonal numbers and composite digit manipulation.
Dr. Kozek actively engages in teaching and mentoring, leading undergraduate research projects and interdisciplinary courses such as 'Mathematics in Pop Culture' and 'Soccermetrics.' He has presented at numerous conferences, including the Joint Mathematics Meetings, and supervised students in research funded by HHMI and Mellon Mays programs.
His academic service includes sabbaticals at the University of Georgia (2013–2014) and Dartmouth College (2013), as well as organizing sessions at MathFest and contributing to initiatives like the Midwest Sports Analytics Meeting.
