About
Dr. Mark Gray is a Senior Lecturer in Large Animal Surgery at the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and The Roslin Institute. His multidisciplinary role spans surgical work at the Large Animal Research and Imaging Facility (LARIF), research on animal disease models, and teaching veterinary students.
His research focuses on Ovine Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma (OPA), a fatal sheep lung cancer with economic and welfare implications. By studying OPA’s infectious mechanisms and tumor development, he aims to create diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies applicable to human lung cancer. Additional projects include tuberculosis in cattle, glioblastoma, and childhood dementia modeling.
Dr. Gray collaborates extensively with the School of Engineering to develop surgical implants and sensors. He emphasizes the translational value of large animal models for human medical procedures, citing physiological similarities between sheep and humans. Despite challenges in funding and administrative complexity, he pioneers novel surgical and imaging techniques.
