Mark Dickinson

Dr. Mark Dickinson is a Professor and Reader in the Photon Physics Group at the University of Manchester’s School of Physics and Astronomy. He holds qualifications including a BSc (Hons) Physics, Dip. Adv. Stud. Sci, PhD, and CPhys certification. His research focuses on medical and biological applications of lasers and photonics, particularly in optical coherence tomography (OCT), laser tweezers, and human pain studies. He collaborates with medical and dental groups and has contributed to industrial partnerships, including spin-off companies like Lynton Lasers and Laser Quantum.

Research interests include laser-based diagnostics and therapy, with recent work on capillaroscopy for vascular imaging in diseases like systemic sclerosis and the development of smartphone apps for monitoring skin conditions. Dickinson leads the Photon Science Institute and utilizes advanced equipment such as high-resolution OCT systems and super-resolution microscopes. His interdisciplinary approach bridges physics, biomedicine, and engineering.

Key collaborations include projects on antibacterial blood irradiation, UV radiation effects on skin microbiomes, and non-invasive biomarkers for fibrosis. Dickinson’s work has societal impact through improved medical technologies and public engagement initiatives.
