About
Mark Devlin is the Reese W. Flower Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences, within the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He leads the Experimental Cosmology Group, focusing on experimental cosmology, instrumentation development, and millimeter/submillimeter astronomy. His research leverages cutting-edge telescopes and detectors to study the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), galaxy clusters, and star formation. Key projects include the Simons Observatory (SO), Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), MUSTANG-2, and the BLAST balloon missions.
Education:
- B.A., University of Wisconsin – Madison (1988)
- M.S. and Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley (1993)
Research Interests: Professor Devlin's work bridges theoretical and observational cosmology. He designs instruments like the Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) and Large Aperture Telescope Receiver (LATR) to detect faint CMB signals and map cosmic structure. Projects such as the ACT and SO aim to uncover the Universe's evolution, dark energy, and neutrino properties. His team also explores galactic magnetic fields and star formation using the BLASTPol and Super BLASTPol instruments.
Grants & Leadership:
- Co-Director, Simons Observatory
- Deputy Director, Atacama Cosmology Telescope
- Funded by NSF, Simons Foundation, and NASA
Labs & Teams: The Devlin Lab at Penn collaborates internationally, hosting graduate students and researchers. Projects include the MUSTANG-2 receiver and the Terahertz Intensity Mapper. The group's work spans instrumentation, data analysis, and theoretical modeling to advance cosmological understanding.
