Mark Deuze

Mark Deuze is a Professor of Media Studies, specifically Journalism, at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Humanities, Department of Media Studies. Appointed in 2014 as evidenced by his inaugural speech on April 25, 2014, he previously held positions at Leiden University and spent approximately 10 years working in America before returning to the Netherlands in 2013.

Deuze's research centers on media's role in everyday life and work, developing influential concepts like 'liquid life' to describe precarious working conditions in contemporary media industries. His work explores how media professionals navigate changing landscapes, with particular focus on freelance journalism, mental health of media workers, and journalists' evolving professional identity. He has extensively studied the transformation of journalism from stable employment to increasingly precarious freelance arrangements.

His research interests span Journalism, Media Studies, Media Work, Mental Health of Media Professionals, Digital Media, Media Industries, Media and War, and the concept of 'Liquid Life.' Deuze has been particularly active in analyzing how media professionals maintain quality journalism while facing economic pressures and job insecurity.

As an educator, Deuze teaches in the Master's program in Journalism and Media at the University of Amsterdam. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining journalistic independence while navigating commercial pressures, believing journalism should function as a 'passion place' for all practitioners regardless of employment status.

Deuze has been involved in significant research projects including a study on women journalists in the Netherlands with Vera Spaans and Klaske Tameling of the Stichting Vrouw en Media, serving as a follow-up to the 1986 study 'Voor zover plaats aan de perstafel.' In recent years, he has focused on the mental health crisis affecting media professionals, delivering keynotes at international conferences and participating in workshops addressing journalist well-being.
