Mark Daniel Bernhardt

Mark Daniel Bernhardt is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and holds the Investors in Business Education Distinguished Professorship in the Gies College of Business. He also serves as a Professor at the University of Warwick and Editor-in-Chief of the Bureau of Economic & Business Research. His academic journey began with a PhD in Economics from Carnegie Mellon University in 1986, followed by postdoctoral research and faculty roles at Queen’s University, Canada, and visiting positions at institutions like the University of Rochester and Caltech.

Prof. Bernhardt’s research spans Industrial Organization, Political Economy, and Microeconomics, with notable contributions to financial markets, political dynamics, and institutional design. His work has been cited by the Nobel Prize Committee in Economics and recognized with awards such as the Alexander Henderson Award for outstanding doctoral thesis. He has authored over 90 refereed journal articles, including seminal studies in the American Economic Review, Journal of Financial Economics, and Games and Economic Behavior.

His recent research explores topics like liquidity costs in financial markets, political polarization, and the economic fragility of democracies.
