Mark D. Bauer is a Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Excellence in Elder Justice at Stetson University College of Law. He teaches Antitrust, Consumer Law, Real Property, Administrative Law, and Financial Advocacy courses. Professor Bauer also supervises Stetson's externship program in Elder Consumer Protection Law and the Full Semester Federal Agency Externship. He previously served as Stetson's Associate Dean for Academics from 2009-2011.
Professor Bauer received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Chicago, where he received the Howell Murray award for outstanding contributions to the university. He earned his law degree from Emory University, where he was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society and taught first-year legal research and writing.
Professor Bauer's research spans several interconnected legal fields. His primary interests include antitrust law (particularly its impact on non-profit sectors, retail, and interplay with consumer protection), administrative law, consumer protection, property law, higher education law, and elder law. He has made significant contributions to understanding age-restricted communities, freedom of association for college organizations, and antitrust issues in retail and professional services.
Professor Bauer has been recognized for his teaching and scholarship, receiving Stetson's Branton Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013 and the Homer and Dolly Hand Award for Faculty Scholarship in 2017. His research has been cited in the New York Times and major newspaper editorials.
Throughout his career, Professor Bauer has held significant positions including Clerk for the Honorable William R. Robie (chief immigration judge), attorney at the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, and private practice in antitrust law in Chicago. He has also served as a visiting scholar at Queen Mary, University of London, and as a Senior International Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
Professor Bauer is active in professional organizations, having chaired the Education Law and Aging and the Law Sections for the Association of American Law Schools and served on the Steering Committee for the Southeastern Association of Law Schools. He currently serves as the faculty representative to the College of Law's Board of Overseers.
