Professor Mark Chambers is a Professor of Microbiology and Disease Intervention at the University of Surrey, with a joint appointment in the School of Veterinary Medicine and School of Biosciences. His roles include Academic Theme Lead for Infection and Immunity and Head of the Section of Animal & Plant Biology. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Cell and Molecular Pathology from the University of Bristol (1989) and a PhD from the University of Cambridge (1992).
Chambers' research focuses on antimicrobial resistance, animal replacement in research, and respiratory diseases. He led the development of BadgerBCG, the first licensed vaccine against tuberculosis in animals, and pioneered a bovine lung-on-chip model for respiratory disease studies. His work bridges disciplines including microbiology, engineering, and sustainability, emphasizing One Health approaches.
Key collaborations include projects with Cardiff University, Glasgow School of Art, and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). He has received recognition as a Sustainability Fellow at the Institute for Sustainability and served as President of the Veterinary Research Club. His recent projects aim to reduce antibiotic use via rapid diagnostics and AI-driven animal welfare solutions.
