Mark Caulfield

Professor Mark Caulfield is a Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Vice Principal for Health at Queen Mary University of London’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He leads the Clinical Pharmacology and Precision Medicine Centre. His academic roles include membership on the Barts Health NHS Trust Board, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust Board, and MedCity Board. He is also President Elect of the British Pharmacological Society.

Education: Graduated in Medicine from the London Hospital Medical College (1984), trained in Clinical Pharmacology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. His research focuses on molecular genetics of hypertension, cardiovascular health, cancer, and rare diseases. Notable contributions include discovering genes influencing blood pressure and shaping international hypertension guidelines.

Research Interests: Molecular genetics of hypertension, translational clinical research, precision medicine, and genomic sequencing initiatives. He pioneered the 100,000 Genomes Project, which revolutionized genomic testing access for NHS patients, leading to his knighthood in 2019. His work emphasizes equitable genomic healthcare access through projects like the National Genomic Test Directory.

Awards: Lily Prize (British Pharmacology Society), Bjorn Folkow Award (European Society of Hypertension), Franz Volhard Award (International Society of Hypertension). His leadership in genomics has transformed clinical practice and healthcare policy.

Advisory & Grants: Directed the NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre, led the Genomics England initiative, and collaborated with NHS England. Sponsors include the British Heart Foundation and National Institute for Health and Care Research. His lab teams include experts in cardiovascular genomics and clinical trials.
