About
Mark Buchheim serves as Professor and Chair of Biological Science at the University of Tulsa, actively leading the institution's participation in the HHMI Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. He directs undergraduate phage discovery initiatives that integrate microbiology and genomic research into classroom instruction.
His research focuses on bacteriophage genomics, microbial evolution, and science education pedagogy, with emphasis on hands-on student engagement in phage isolation and genomic analysis. Current work utilizes Arthrobacter globiformis as a host organism for novel phage discovery.
For Spring Semester 2025, Dr. Buchheim serves as primary instructor for BIOL 1711-02 and additional instructor for BIOL 1711-03, teaching 28 total students across two sections of the Phage Discovery course. He collaborates with instructors Sima Jonusaite, Katie Mika, and Rick Portman in delivering this in situ microbiology curriculum meeting twice weekly for 3.5 hours per section.
