Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research OrganisationAbout
Dr. Mark Baird is Research Director of the Coastal and Oceanic Systems (COS) Research Program at Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). His program integrates remote sensing, bio-optics, genomics, and sensor technologies to model marine ecosystems, supporting environmental management, blue carbon assessment, and Great Barrier Reef conservation. Previously, he held roles as Principal/Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, Senior Research Fellow at UTS, and ARC Research Fellow at UNSW.
Education:
- Ph.D. (University of Warwick, 2000)
- M.Sc. (University of Hawaii, 1996)
- B.E. Hons (University of Sydney, 1993)
Baird's research focuses on biological and physical oceanography, biogeochemical modelling, and coral reef dynamics. He develops ecological parameterizations for hydrodynamic models (e.g., CSIRO Environmental Modelling Suite, ROMS) and leads the eReefs marine modelling system, which predicts water quality, coral stress responses, and intervention strategies for the Great Barrier Reef.
His recent publications (2023-2025) emphasize climate resilience, coral bleaching mechanisms, nutrient pollution, and advanced environmental modelling. Trends include interdisciplinary approaches to reef conservation, climate refugia identification, and validation of restoration technologies like sun shields for corals.
Awards and Honors:
- Fellow, Australian Coral Reef Society (2020–present)
- Australian Research Fellowship, ARC (2005–2009)
- Australian Postdoctoral Award, ARC (2001–2004)
Grants and Leadership: Baird secured >$4M in competitive funding, including NASA and ARC projects (e.g., $387K for phytoplankton production studies). He directs CSIRO's COS Program, chairs the IOCCG Modelling Working Group, represents CSIRO on the Reef 2050 Advisory Committee, and served as President of the Tasmanian Marine Science Association (2012–2017).
