Mark A. Reid is Professor of English at the University of Florida with affiliate appointments in African American Studies and European Studies. He earned his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Iowa (1988) and specializes in African American cinema, Black diaspora studies, and postNegritude theory.
His research examines representations of Black identity across global cinema, focusing on intersections of race, gender, and nation. Recent publications explore diasporic visual culture and the evolution of Black film aesthetics from blaxploitation to contemporary independent cinema.
Reid's influential books include Black Lenses, Black Voices (2005), PostNegritude Visual and Literary Culture (1997), and Redefining Black Film (1993). His scholarship analyzes how filmmakers negotiate racial politics across American, African, and European contexts.
