Associate Professor · Marine Ecology
California State University, NorthridgeAbout
Dr. Mark A. Steele is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at California State University, Northridge. He earned a B.A. in Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution from UC San Diego (1989) and a Ph.D. in Biology from UC Santa Barbara (1995). After postdoctoral work at UCLA and a Research Assistant Professor position at the University of Rhode Island, he joined CSUN in 2006.
Research Interests: Dr. Steele studies open population dynamics in marine organisms, focusing on reef and estuarine fishes. His work evaluates processes driving abundance variation, including shelter limitation, predation, density dependence, and habitat restoration. Key programs include
- Density dependence in non-exploited reef fish
- Fisheries management of exploited species
- Artificial reef evaluation
- Estuarine fish ecology in wetland restoration
Recent Publications emphasize spatial scaling of density dependence, experimental approaches to reef fish ecology, and methodological advancements in marine sampling.
