About
Professor Mariusz Lamentowicz is a leading expert in wetland ecology and palaeoecology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. As Head of the Climate Change Ecology Research Unit, he focuses on peatland ecosystems, particularly their functional diversity and responses to climate and anthropogenic disturbances. His work integrates multi-proxy analyses, lipid biomarkers, and historical data to understand long-term ecological changes and inform conservation strategies.
Key research areas include peatland hydrology, microbial ecology, and the impacts of historical land-use changes on ecosystems. He has pioneered studies in Central Europe, Western Siberia, and the Bia? owie?a Primeval Forest, emphasizing the interplay between human activity and environmental stability. His findings contribute to restoration frameworks and policy-making for peatland protection.
Professor Lamentowicz’s interdisciplinary approach combines paleoecological records with modern field experiments. He has authored over 50 recent studies (2021–2025) addressing topics like permafrost thawing, peatland carbon dynamics, and the legacy of medieval land management. His research underscores the urgency of addressing tipping points in fragile ecosystems under climate change.
Notably, he collaborates with the AMU Research Centre for Energy and Environmental Challenges, based in the School of Humanities. His photographic work documents wetland ecosystems, complementing his scientific contributions. Current projects focus on functional biodiversity, critical transitions in peatlands, and the application of neodymium isotopes to trace environmental disturbances.
