Marita Everhardt

Dr. Marita Everhardt is a researcher at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts, specifically affiliated with the Neurolinguistics and Language Development department. She completed her PhD in 2023 with a dissertation titled 'Non-native prosody perception in cochlear implant-simulated speech' and has been actively contributing to the field of speech linguistics since at least 2017 when she served as co-promotor on a PhD project related to L2 prosody perception.

Her research interests center on how cochlear implant users and non-native speakers process prosody, lexical stress, and other aspects of speech. Her work examines foreign language acquisition in adolescent cochlear implant users, lexical stress identification, and prosodic focus interpretation in spectrotemporally degraded speech conditions. She employs methodologies from phonetics, psycholinguistics, and hearing science to investigate how degraded auditory signals affect language processing.

Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of cochlear implant technology and second language acquisition, with particular attention to prosodic elements of speech. Her research demonstrates how cochlear implants, while restoring hearing function, create unique challenges for perceiving linguistic cues that rely on fine-grained acoustic information.
