Marit Westerterp

Dr. Marit Westerterp is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences, Department of Pediatrics. She holds adjunct positions at Columbia University and is a Rosalind Franklin Fellow and VIDI Laureate. Her research focuses on cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, lipoprotein metabolism, and cholesterol efflux pathways. She earned her PhD from Leiden University Medical Center and completed postdoctoral training at Columbia University and the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam.

Key research interests include the role of cholesterol transporters like ABCA1/ABCG1, inflammation in atherosclerosis, and the interplay between lipid metabolism and immune responses. She has received prestigious awards, including the Steinberg Early Career Award (2017) and the Roger Davis Award (2015).

Her work spans translational studies in animal models and human populations, addressing mechanisms linking cholesterol metabolism to cardiovascular pathogenesis. She has contributed to over 90 peer-reviewed publications and actively participates in editorial boards, such as Circulation Research.
