About
Mario Jurić is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of Washington and a Senior Data Science Fellow at the eScience Institute. He holds the Washington Research Foundation Data Science Term Chair. His research focuses on astronomical 'Big Data,' particularly developing methods for analyzing large-scale surveys like the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). He leads the LSST Data Management team and is involved in projects such as the DECam Ecliptic Exploration (DEEP) and Sorcha simulator.
- Education: PhD in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University (2007), Postdoctoral work at Institute for Advanced Study (2006-2009), Harvard University (2009-2011), and LSST/AURA (2012-2014).
- Research Interests: Galactic structure, Solar System dynamics, survey science, and computational astronomy.
- Key Projects: LSST Data Management, galfast mock catalog generator, and Large Survey Database (LSD).
His work bridges astronomy and data science, emphasizing large-scale data infrastructure and algorithm development for modern surveys. He teaches courses on Python for Astronomy and Big Data methodologies.
