About
Mario Berta is a Professor of Physics at the Institute for Quantum Information, RWTH Aachen University. He holds an honorary Visiting Reader position at Imperial College London's Department of Computing. Previously, he was a Senior Research Scientist at Amazon's Quantum Computing Center and a Postdoctoral Researcher at Caltech's Institute for Quantum Information and Matter. He earned his PhD from ETH Zurich's Institute for Theoretical Physics.
His research focuses on mathematical foundations of quantum information science, including quantum communication theory, cryptography, and algorithm design. He leads the ERC-funded QEntropy project (ERC Starting Grant) exploring quantum entropy applications. Open PhD/postdoc positions are available under this grant.
Recent work includes submissions accepted at QIP 2025 on entanglement quantification, entropy continuity, and channel simulation. His group also studies quantum Gibbs sampling and algorithmic complexity.
Funding comes from the European Research Council, ML4Q Cluster, RWTH Exploratory Research Space, and EPSRC. Hiring priorities emphasize theoretical physics and quantum information backgrounds.
