About
Marieke Hendriksen is a historian of science and medicine at Utrecht University, serving as a postdoctoral researcher within the ERC-funded Artechne project. Her work focuses on reconstructing the historical semantics and transmission of technical knowledge across artistic and scientific domains from 1500 to 1950.
Her research specializes in eighteenth-century material practices, particularly examining medicine chests, anatomical preparation methods, colored glass production, and historical anatomical collections. She approaches these subjects through material culture analysis, investigating how techniques were documented, taught, and transformed across European contexts. Her current Artechne project develops an interactive semantic-geographical map to trace the evolution of 'technique' as a conceptual framework.
Dr. Hendriksen's scholarly recognition includes:
- Prestigious fellowship at the National Maritime Museum (London)
- Research fellowship at Groningen University
- Max Planck Institute for the History of Science fellowship (Berlin)
She actively contributes to the ERC Artechne project's collaborative framework, participating in workshops and seminars that bridge historical research with experimental re-enactment methodologies. Her work connects with laboratory networks including Ateliergebouw (Amsterdam), VICARTE (University of Lisbon), and Kunstlab (Utrecht University), where historical techniques are practically investigated.
