Marie T. Hernandez is a Professor in the Department of World Cultures and Literatures at the University of Houston's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Rice University (2001) and a B.A. from Sam Houston State University.
Her research focuses on globalization theories, religious studies, and ethnography with specialization in Latin American and Latino Studies. Key areas include the intersection of Judaism and Christianity in Mexican religious iconography, deep South Texas history, and gender studies. She has conducted groundbreaking work on the Virgin of Guadalupe's origins and the hidden converso influences in Mexican religious history.
Current projects include a study on folkhero Juan Nepomuceno Cortina's historical narrative and its impact on American ideology. Her research often involves archival discoveries, such as manuscripts by 19th-century priest Manuel Espinosa de los Monteros.
