Dr. Marie Farson is an Associate Professor of Earth Science and Engineering Science and Department Chair for Engineering at Principia College. She specializes in marine engineering, with over 15 years of sea-going research experience using autonomous and unmanned vehicles in locations like Panama, Singapore, and India. Dr. Farson is also a pioneer in open-source hardware, including 3-D printers and filament extruders made from recycled plastics for use in developing countries.
Her scholarly interests span undersea vehicles, marine geophysics, and sustainable technology. Notable contributions include acoustic and vibration analyses for naval submarines, design of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for diverse underwater environments, and development of a precision sound velocimeter for studying tectonic plate activity.
Dr. Farson has been honored as the Fairfax County Engineering Teacher of the Year. Her research and publications focus on advancing underwater exploration technologies and environmental sustainability through innovative engineering solutions.
