About
Marie Bassford is an Associate Professor in Physics at De Montfort University, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Sustainable Development within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media. She holds a PhD and MPhys in Physics from the University of Leicester and has been a key contributor to physics and engineering education at DMU.
Her research expertise lies at the intersection of Optics/Imaging Technology and STEM pedagogy, with a strong emphasis on inclusive and accessible education. She investigates how to support neurodivergent students, enhance laboratory accessibility, and rethink assessment in the age of artificial intelligence. Her work promotes equity and diversity in undergraduate STEM programs through innovative teaching practices and curriculum design.
Marie's publications reflect a consistent focus on educational innovation, particularly in engineering and physics. Themes include inclusive learning environments, playful pedagogy (e.g., PuzzlEd), sensory sensitivities, and the use of authentic experiences in teaching. She explores how to harness neurodivergent strengths such as hyperfocus and special interests in academic settings.
She is the recipient of the Advance HE Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) in 2018, a testament to her impactful contributions to teaching. She is also a member of the Institute of Physics (MInstP) and serves as Treasurer for the Leicestershire Branch of the British Science Association.
Marie has led and co-led multiple internally funded research projects focused on teaching innovation, including initiatives on forensic investigation modules, student performance of autistic students in physics, and the development of novel imaging sensors. She has engaged in consultancy with Rolls-Royce and other industry partners, bridging academic research with real-world applications. She supervises student projects and contributes to a wide range of undergraduate courses in engineering and physics.
She is actively involved in outreach through initiatives like CrashEd, an interactive STEM learning experience based on car crash scenarios, demonstrating her commitment to public engagement and hands-on learning.
