Mariam Georgis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University (SFU), located on unceded Coast Salish territories. Her research focuses on global Indigenous politics, colonialism, and southwest Asian (Middle Eastern) studies. She holds a PhD from the University of Alberta (2017), an MA from McMaster University (2008), and a BA from McMaster (2007).
Her work integrates decolonial and Indigenous feminist frameworks to analyze issues of sovereignty, displacement, and resistance in contexts like present-day Iraq. Previously, she was a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba's Mamawipawin Centre for Indigenous Governance. Key themes include Assyrian Indigeneity, transnational solidarity movements, and critiques of colonial state-building.
Publications span journals like Meridians and Millennium, addressing topics such as ISIS origins, economic sanctions' humanitarian impacts, and recentering Indigenous perspectives in International Relations theory. She teaches courses on global feminisms and decolonial praxis.
