University of the West of EnglandAbout
Mariadele Boccardi is a Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of the West of England, Bristol, within the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries, and Education (ACE). She has been a faculty member since 2003, teaching across all undergraduate levels with specializations in inter-war British country house fiction and contemporary British literature. She served as Programme Leader for English Literature (2016-2021) and currently acts as Admissions Tutor.
Her academic credentials include a BA from the University of Bergamo, MSc from the University of Edinburgh, PhD from the University of Cambridge, and PGCertTLHE from UWE Bristol.
Dr Boccardi's research centers on contemporary British historical fiction, evidenced by her monograph "The Contemporary British Historical Novel: Representation, Nation, Empire" (Palgrave, 2009) and her critical study of A.S. Byatt (Palgrave, 2013). Her current project "Environmental Neo-Victorianism" (under contract with Palgrave, 2027) merges ecocritical and postcolonial theories to analyze how 19th-century colonial landscapes in contemporary fiction historicize the environmental crisis through colonial-capitalist legacies.
She has supervised PhD research on David Peace's Red Riding Quartet and actively recruits doctoral candidates in historical fiction, Neo-Victorianism, and literature-environment intersections, supporting applications for the South, West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership funding.
