Maria Utheim is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo. She holds a cand.mag. in History, History of Ideas, and Sociology (1997), a College Candidate in Journalism (1999), and a Master's in Journalism (2009). Her research focuses on press history, journalism ethics, gender and media, and Nordic media dynamics. She has served as Head of Teaching, Deputy Head, and interim Head of the Department (2016–2020).
Her notable work includes a 2012 study on the Engebret movement in Pressehistorisk tidsskrift. Current projects include the TOGETHER initiative (2022–2025), exploring formative assessment practices in higher education, and a 2014 study on freedom of expression in Norway. She sits on UiO's Board of Student Affairs (2023–2025) and advisory boards for Uniforum and Apollon (2022–2025).
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in media analysis, journalism ethics, political communication, and Nordic media contexts. She has led projects on peer assessment (2019–2021) and Canvas-based feedback systems (2020–2021).
