About
Dr. Maria Katsikogianni is an Assistant Professor in Biomaterials Chemistry at the University of Bradford, Faculty of Life Sciences, School of Chemistry & Biosciences. Her research focuses on the biomimetic design of multifunctional materials for clinical applications, particularly non-fouling/antimicrobial materials to prevent medical device-associated bone infections. Her work integrates biomaterial science, life sciences, and engineering.
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece
- BSc in Chemistry from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Her expertise spans surface engineering, nanoscale patterning of polymers, incorporation of antimicrobial compounds via Green Chemistry, and characterization of material physicochemical properties. She investigates bacteria/cell-material interactions using advanced microscopy techniques.
Collaborations include the Centre for Polymer Micro and Nano Technology, Polymer IRC, and Cardiff University. Her research has secured funding from MeDe Innovation (EPSRC) and INTERREG Greece-Italy programs.
- Shortlisted for Sir Henry Dale Wellcome Trust/Royal Society Fellowship
- Co-investigator on two EPSRC MeDe Innovation Dragons Den Awards (2017)
- PI for EPSRC MeDe Innovation Fresh Ideas Fund (2016)
Maria has authored 20 peer-reviewed papers, 3 book chapters, and a patent application (GB20120015171, W02014030005 A1). She teaches modules including 'Imaging,' 'Chemistry For Engineers,' and 'Advanced Laboratory And Research Skills.'
