Maria Dumitru is a Doctoral Research Fellow in Gender Studies and Romani Studies at the MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion, and Society. Her PhD project, part of the RCN-funded MEMOROBIA initiative, focuses on the historical legacy of Roma enslavement in Romania and Europe, emphasizing memorialization, internalized racism, and the female slave experience. She holds an MA in Gender Studies from Central European University and a BA in Communication and PR from the University of Craiova.
Her research interests center on historical memory, racialized poverty, and anti-Roma racism. Dumitru has contributed to projects addressing homelessness (Westminster Homelessness Partnership, UK), Roma empowerment (Romanipen feminist organization, Berlin), and social work with the Salvation Army in Oslo and Norway. She has also served as a volunteer and researcher in various organizations, including the William Tyrell Foundation in Romania and MF Norwegian School of Theology.
Her current work integrates academic research with community engagement, aiming to disseminate knowledge about marginalized histories and promote social justice.
