Maria Ågren

Maria Ågren is a Professor of History at Uppsala University since 2002, specializing in early modern Scandinavian historical studies. Previously, she held professorial positions at MidSweden University (2001-2002) and served as Lecturer/Researcher (1999-2001), Assistant Professor (1994-1998), and Swedish Research Council-funded Researcher (1992-1994) at Uppsala University.

Her research centers on the intersection of legal, social, and economic history with particular focus on property systems, gender dynamics, and inheritance practices in early modern Sweden. Ågren investigates how property concepts evolved from restricted legal frameworks to broader cultural constructs, examining marriage systems, women's economic agency, and legal pluralism during Sweden's transition from community-based to state-centered legal systems.
