Margo M. Mahan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the intersections of law, race, gender, and power, particularly examining the racialized origins of U.S. domestic violence laws. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (2017) and a B.S. from the United States Military Academy (1999).
Her research interests include sociological studies of culture, gender, politics, race, historical approaches, and qualitative methodologies. She teaches courses on race and ethnic relations and topics in sociology. Her current book project analyzes how post-Civil War white-supremacist agendas influenced domestic violence legislation through a lens of gender and racial hierarchy.
Mahon’s work bridges legal sociology, critical race theory, and gender studies. She is affiliated with the LSA Building in Ann Arbor and maintains an active academic website.
