Margaret Richardson

Margaret A. Richardson is a Senior Lecturer at Christopher Newport University (CNU), affiliated with the Department of Fine Art and Art History and the Center for Sustainability in Education. Her teaching focuses on Modern & Contemporary Global Art, Asian Art, and courses such as Senior Seminar and Aesthetic Philosophy. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), an MA in Art History from VCU, and a BA in English and Studio Art from Mary Baldwin College.

Her research explores thematic connections in modern and contemporary art across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas, emphasizing cultural exchange, colonialism, and globalization. Notable publications include studies on Rabindranath Tagore, Sook Jin Jo, and K.G. Subramanyan. She has received awards for teaching excellence, including the Provost’s Award (2015, 2018) and Phi Beta Kappa (1997).

Her work bridges art and literature, with particular attention to postcolonial contexts and the interplay between tradition and modernism. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives at CNU, including sustainability-focused education programs.
