About
Dr. Margaret L. Rand is a Professor at the University of Toronto with cross-appointments in the Departments of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Biochemistry, and Pediatrics. She co-directs the Clinical Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Laboratory at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where she is a Senior Associate Scientist in the Pediatric Thrombosis and Hemostasis Program and the Physiology and Experimental Medicine Program.
- PhD in Biochemistry, University of Toronto
- Postdoctoral Fellowships: Universiteit Maastricht, McMaster University
Her research focuses on blood platelet function and dysfunction, particularly hereditary/acquired disorders, stored platelet viability, and in vivo platelet effectors. She has contributed to understanding phosphatidylserine exposure, microparticle formation, and ADP-induced activation mechanisms.
Recent publications highlight her work on molecular hemostasis, thrombosis, and platelet signaling. Themes include glycoprotein polymorphisms, annexin derivatives, and mitochondrial dynamics in platelet disorders.
She serves on committees such as the Canadian Society for Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, and the Association of Hemophilia Clinic Directors of Canada, though no formal scientific awards are explicitly listed.
Dr. Rand teaches BCH449H Medical Biochemistry and leads translational research on pediatric bleeding questionnaires and platelet clearance mechanisms. Her future work will focus on genetic polymorphisms in platelet membrane proteins linked to bleeding/thrombosis risk.
