Margaret Humphreys is Josiah Charles Trent Distinguished Professor of History of Medicine at Duke University, with joint appointments in History and Medicine. Her scholarship examines American medicine, tropical diseases, Civil War healthcare, and racial disparities in health. She holds MD and PhD degrees from Harvard University and has led major research projects on epidemic diseases.
Research reconstructs historical disease environments and medical responses, including yellow fever outbreaks, malaria control, and Civil War medical practices. Current book projects analyze African American physicians in Civil War medicine and prisoner-of-war camp medical ethics.
Publications include award-winning books on yellow fever and Civil War medicine. Teaching integrates historical perspectives into medical education. International lectureships include Oxford University and China Residency Fellowship for social history of medicine.
