Marcus Zagermann

PD Dr. Marcus Zagermann is a Research Associate at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 2007) and Privatdozent at the University of Bamberg's Department of Archaeology of the Roman Provinces. His academic journey includes studies at the University of Freiburg (MA 2003, PhD 2008) and a habilitation at Bamberg (2021).

His research explores:

• Roman frontier systems and late antique fortifications
• Material culture studies with ceramic typology expertise
• Settlement transitions between Antiquity and Early Middle Ages
• Alpine and Rhine Valley archaeology
• Excavation methodology and site management

Publications focus on Roman provincial archaeology, particularly fortresses (Breisach, Monte San Martino), material analyses, and cultural transitions, with recent work examining Lombard ceramics and economic patterns. Fieldwork includes excavations across Germany, France, and Italy.
