Professor Marcus Milwright holds the British Academy Global Professorship in History of Art and is a Professor of Islamic Art and Archaeology at the University of Victoria, Canada. He specializes in the art, archaeology, and craft practices of the Islamic Middle East, Ottoman architecture, and cross-cultural exchanges in the Mediterranean. His research integrates written sources, archaeological data, and material culture to explore technological and aesthetic changes in Islamic art. He leads projects in Jordan, Syria, and Greece, and maintains websites documenting traditional crafts like Crafts of Syria.
Education: MA (Edinburgh), DPhil (Oxford). Key awards include the Craigdarroch Silver Medal (2013) and Aga Khan Fellowships (2006). He has supervised over 20 PhD and MA students, focusing on topics like Quranic calligraphy, Mamluk metalwork, and Ottoman urbanism.
