Prof. Dr. Marcus Deufert is a Full Professor of Classics (Chair of Latin) at the University of Leipzig since 2003. He previously held roles including Interim Professor at Leipzig (2002–2003), Visiting Scholar at King’s College London (2001–2002), and Research/Teaching Assistant at the University of Göttingen (1995–2001). He serves as Vice Dean of the Philological Faculty at Leipzig (2011–2013).
Education: Studies in Classical Philology and Modern German Literature at Universities of Würzburg, Cologne, Bonn, and Cambridge (1989–1995). Earned Dr. phil. (1995) and Habilitation (2001) from the University of Bonn and Göttingen respectively.
Research focuses on: History of Classical scholarship, Lucretius reception, textual transmission of ancient texts, Plautus’ comedies, ancient poet biographies, and early Latin metre. His work combines textual criticism with historical contextualization, emphasizing the interplay between ancient literature and its reception.
Publications include monographs on Lucretius’ textual authenticity, Plautus’ reception history, and Terentian biography, alongside articles on Vergilian scholarship and metrics in Roman comedy.
