About
Marco Demaria is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen and leads the Laboratory of Cellular Senescence and Age-related Pathologies at the European Research Institute for the Biology of Aging (ERIBA). His research focuses on the role of cellular senescence in aging, cancer, and tissue repair.
- PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of Torino, Italy
Dr. Demaria’s work explores how senescent cells contribute to age-related pathologies and chemotherapy side effects. His team develops tools to analyze senescent cells in vivo and investigates therapeutic strategies to target these cells for improved healthspan.
Recent publications highlight his lab’s advancements in SASP regulation under hypoxia and dietary stress, senescent microglia in aging brains, and computational methods for senescence detection. These studies span cellular metabolism, tumor biology, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Demaria co-founded the start-up Cleara Biotech in 2018 to develop anti-senescence drugs and serves as President of the International Cell Senescence Association (ICSA) and Editor-in-Chief of npj Aging.
