Marcelo Dias

Marcelo Dias is Reader in Structural Engineering at the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering, leading the Mechanics and Geometry of Advanced Structures Laboratory. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from UNESP, M.Sc. in Theoretical Physics from the same institution, and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research develops mathematical frameworks for mechanical metamaterials, origami-inspired structures, and biomechanics.

Current investigations focus on geometric mechanics of thin elastic structures, failure mechanisms in architected materials, and functional design of shape-morphing systems. The laboratory combines analytical modeling with experimental validation to create engineered materials with programmable mechanical properties.
