Lucia received his M.Sc. degree in Algebra (Galois Theory) from the University of Lausanne, followed by a Ph.D. in nonlinear analysis from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. His academic journey progressed through prestigious postdoctoral positions at the University of Rome II, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (Barcelona), Rutgers University, Tata Institute of Technology (Bangalore), Chinese Academy of Sciences (Beijing), and National Center of Theoretical Sciences (Taiwan), before securing his faculty position at CUNY in 2007 with tenure granted in 2016.
His research focuses on nonlinear problems arising in mathematical physics, differential geometry, and chemotaxis models, with particular emphasis on existence and uniqueness of solutions. His specific research areas include Partial Differential Equations, Calculus of Variations, Nonlinear Analysis, and Morse Theory, with connections to optimal exponential Sobolev inequalities. The seminar series he organizes reveals his deep engagement with geometric analysis, PDE theory, and mathematical physics, with recent emphasis on minimal surface theory, Ricci flow singularities, and connections between fluid dynamics and geometric analysis.
- Alexander von Humboldt grant (2006)
- Ramón Y Cajal Fellowship (2008)
As a principal investigator, Lucia has secured substantial funding including a Simons Foundation Grant ($35,000, 2011-2016) and multiple PSC-CUNY Research Grants (awarded in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2020). He has served as Co-PI on significant collaborative projects including Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación grants from Spain (MTM 2014 and MTM 2017) and a Virtual Institute of Mathematics and Statistics Grant with the Tata Institute at Bangalore. His research collaborations span international institutions across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Lucia organizes the Nonlinear Analysis Seminar at the CUNY Graduate Center (Room 6417, Thursdays 6:30pm-8:00pm), which provides a forum for discussing techniques used in nonlinear problems arising in applied mathematics, physics, and differential geometry. The seminar often features collaborations with the Geometric Analysis Seminar, creating a vibrant research community around nonlinear analysis at CUNY.
