Dr. Marcela Borge is an Associate Professor of Education in the Learning, Design, and Technology program within the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University. Her research focuses on the intersection of learning, cognition, and design, with particular emphasis on group cognition and developing technological tools to enhance collaborative learning processes.
Dr. Borge earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Education with a focus on Cognition and Development: Education in Math, Science, and Technology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2007 and 2004 respectively. She also holds a B.A. in Psychology from UC Berkeley (2001).
Her research interests include computer-supported collaborative learning, cognition and development, sociocultural theory, human-computer interaction, design-based research methods, scenario-based design, intelligent systems, technology-supported self-regulated learning, socio-metacognition, and multicultural collaborative competence. Dr. Borge's work centers on understanding how groups collectively innovate through information synthesis and knowledge negotiation, developing new interaction models and technological tools to enhance learning.

Dr. Borge has led several significant research projects including CREATE (Collaborative Regulation, Enhanced Analysis, and Thinking Environment), CoLearnr, and various initiatives focused on collaborative learning systems. Her current research aims to develop students' collaborative expertise alongside Human-Centered Design knowledge and practices.

Dr. Borge actively mentors students at all levels and develops after-school programs for children ages 8-12 to build collaborative digital literacy and higher-order thinking skills through human-centered design challenges using maker tools like Legos, Makey-Makey, and MinecraftEdu.
