Eindhoven University of TechnologyAbout
Marcel van Genderen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), where he leads research in Bio-organic Chemistry. He has been with the university since his PhD in 1989 and was appointed associate professor in 2002. His work focuses on supramolecular chemistry, particularly NMR spectroscopy for molecular structure analysis and dynamic biomaterials with applications in vascular grafts and microgel engineering.
- Education: Chemistry at TU/e (MSc 1984, cum laude), PhD in Organic Chemistry (1989)
- Professional History: Assistant professor at TU/e (post-1989), sabbatical at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (1995), Director of Education (part-time, 2006–2018)
His research explores how ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy) motifs enable tunable supramolecular polymers, with recent work analyzing pH-responsive systems and bioactive microgels for cell interaction. Publications highlight alkyl spacer effects on polymer dynamics and mechanical properties.
Recent collaborative articles (2024–2025) span topics like anti-kinking vascular grafts, modular microgel engineering, and UPy-peptide hybrid materials. These works emphasize non-covalent interactions, self-assembly, and biocompatibility for biomedical applications.
He contributes to educational programs in Organic Chemistry, Biomaterials, and Instrumental Analysis. Collaborations include partnerships with ICMS Core and Microsystems Group at TU/e.
